What if you wrapped foam spars in canvas and tb2 before you put them up? Think that'd work

well i don't have the framing for windows or door. but i do have wood blocks to hold the screws in for the hardware.
i think that is pretty much the reason for the wood spars, to hold the foam down, we screwed screws in thru the foam to the wood spars, with the gg inbetween. i have never taken the screws out.

canvas covered foam for spars "might" work, but i haven't tested it. perhaps if the second build really gets going i might do just that. i do believe for what i want, all the rest of the wood i could replace with foam though.

Just for practicality , sometimes wood is a Good thing ... Just that it’s Heavy (compared to Foam) , so to save weight , it’s use should be restricted to where it’s really needed ... ;)
...as an example , cabinets /shelves, etc. could easily be built from skinned foam , and reinforced with wood IF NEEDED... We don’t carry Heavy things on these shelves anyway .. and if we did , it’s so easy to make them as strong as they need by just bracing them properly ... For heavy duty use a skin of the thinnest plywood available would add tremendous strength and still not be nearly as heavy as an all wood shelf ... :o

As has been said many times before , we all tend to “Over-build “ !!!! And then there’s the wood to be considered ... I used Alaskan cedar on mine , which is bug and rot resistant , easy to work, and half the weight of Pine ... plenty strong enough , especially since that’s skinned too... which makes wood stronger, just as it does Foam ... :D

10/23 - finished cabinets, sides up

Postby millstone » Sun Oct 23, 2011 7:50 pm

Been steady working on the camper, but, not enough progress at one time to warrant an update, until now.

The last three weeks have been all about the cabinets. That, and trying to shake a huge chest cold. My wife and kids all went to the doctor, and were treated for bronchitis. My guess is that's what I had as well. Regardless, the work on the camper has been in slow motion.

But we got the finish on the cabinets.

Went with Antique Red for the woodwork and left the lauan natural. 2 coats of spar varnish.

Need psychiatric help. Ten cabinet doors.

Took some sound advice and made the doorways taller.

The foam panels really stiffened up when I gorilla glued them to the front cabinet. I also laid the sides in a good bead of GG, then "pinned" them to the trailer floor with 1/2" wooden dowels. 8 per side.

Image
A view from the rear. May build a short riser to attach the upper cabinet to the lower. Figure the hatch hinge will go just aft of the upper cabinet face. Hopefully it'll all tie in together.

Guess thats it for now. Hope to get my help back next weekend for some major decision making. Have some LED puck lights for the ceiling. Also have some pretty cool reading lights w/switches for the top of the lauan sections on the front cabinets.

Found a 240 mm (10") computer case fan online. Quiet, few amps. Figure it'll cycle the air in the entire cabin in about eight minutes.

Next week, finish mounting the cabinets. Place some spars, and run some electrical wire.

Hey Mark it looks great, if I'd thought about it I would've tried to drop by as we're spending our 3rd night at Watsons mill tent camping. Its our anniversary and my tv is down so we tente sd it. We'll have to get together when your feeling better. We'll be camping out once more in November and atleast the last week of December. Good luck,

Watson Mill is awesome

Postby millstone » Sun Oct 23, 2011 8:59 pm

A jewel in the Georgia State Park system. Too bad the state park system is broke. They've cut back a lot there, but it's still amazing. Probably one of the most photographed sites in the state.

The whole downsize thing bothers me. Hart State Park used to be beautiful. It was one of the first in the state, along with Bobby Brown here in Elbert County, to revert to State Recreation Area. Hart has gone way downhill in the last year or so.

Bobby Brown was a great state park too. I haven't been there in a while, though.

I'll probably take the maiden voyage to Watson Mill. Close enough. Yeah, holler when you're back up this way. Happy to have you.

OK... if you think that is slow progress, then I am making NO progress. Personally, I think you're doing fine. I like the way your cabinets look. Did you set your sides in place already? I'm planning to get all the cabinets in place and then set sides in. Working inside out, but I think that makes the most sense if you're using the cabinets as support bulkheads. GREAT JOB so far!!! Keep up the good work :applause:  :applause:

Mark sorry to be the barer of bad news but from the paperwork that was left on our windshield this weekend, the park will close Nov. 1st and not open til Mar. 15th and then its temporarily as a recreation area. This week I plan on emailing Neil Boertz that sheet and Sean Hannity as the park could sustain itself but part of the money it makes from treeing some of the trails is spent in other programs in the state not park related. It will have camping but 1st come first serve and no electric or water. It just sucks is all I can nicely say about it.

Hi Millstone,

You're making good progress!

The new door proportions look great with the profile.

Keep up your good work - it's definitely paying off for you.

Cheers,

Hi Tim

Im putting them between a Lauan ceiling and the foam roof. The batteries will be in the front closet on the floor (need vented). I may just run the trailer lights in conduit under the floor attached to the trailer frame. I haven't decided whether to build the lights into the hatch or simply place them on the fenders.

The worst pat about it is the State of Georgia has had a month to month increase in tax revenues for the last year. You would think that at some point they could stop cutting services.l
