We were driving back from Tennessee on I75 and just south of Bowling Green we encounters a rollover of a van. We stopped and I pulled out my first aid kit, there were folks that had been thrown from the van. Fortunately a hospital had just had a shift change and a number of doctors and nurses were on the scene prior to EMS I tended a young girl who had been ejected from the van. she said again and again "why can't I wake up". My feeling is that who ever had been driving fell a sleep at the wheel and paid with it with their life, there was one adult under the over turned van.
My overwhelming feeling was anger, if they had been wearing seat belts the damage and probable loss of life would have been been much less.

Would have been coming home from the Black Hills of South Dakota last summer. Woke up at about 4 am, finally got people up and moving around 9, had to stop at Flintsone village in Custer(nephew had been there before and neice was only 6 months old, like she is going to remember)stopped for lunch at noon in Rapid City, had to stop at Wall Drug(this after spending a minimum of an hour in every gift shop at every tourist trap for three days), back on the road about 5 pm. Finally found someplace for supper(Mitchel, SD)at midnight, after supper I was getting very drowsy, everyone else in car was asleep, kicked it off cruise and would vary the speed, at Beresford(about 30 miles to home)I stopped to move around and get a cup of coffee, finally got home about 3am, wnet to bed and then couldn't sleep.
If I could shut my brain off, I could save myself alot of time, money and effort.

Worst drive cant think of, other than through NYC (man I hate that place) I don't mind any long drive if I have the time and $$$$. Heck I have my bed room with me! No mater what time of year it is I find some where to ( truck stop, wallmart ) sleep for a while and then get going again..... I have a idea I was thinking about installing on my car. If you have a automatic car starter on your car you could hook up an dc/ac inverter that is big enough to run a small electric heater. Get out of the car run a cord up to the inverter, start the car with the remote get in your tear fire up the heater. Get it nice and warm turn the car and heater off and sleep. With this method you would have a very big for wheel generator with you at all times.

For me it's hard to predict. Driving sometimes/often triggers "THE PAIN". :( I can remember one time pulling over as I could no longer see. TEARS. I sometimes have to pull off the freeway, find a place to have a soda or something to eat, and let "THE PAIN" subside before continuing. :worship: As often as possible I have a "copilot" to take over when the going gets tough.

I went to Seattle (1200) miles one way this past summer. :D Pushed too hard and it took months to recover. :( :( Fortunately I have a short memory and I'm gonna do it again this summer after going to China for two weeks.

Could be "worser".

Cheers,

Gus

For me, the worst drive is I-95 from Winnemucca, NV to Ontario, OR. It's about 250 miles/5 hours of pain. It is mind numbingly boring. Way too hard to stay awake. It's two lane highway most of the way but thankfully there is very little traffic. It goes from 70 mph in Nevada, to 55 mph in Oregon, to 65 mph in Idaho and then back into 55 mph Oregon. Same two lane road, but different speed limits. The only place to stop is in Jordan Valley, OR and it's really only a wide spot in the road. The only restrooms were in the gas station and they were so dirty, my wife and daughters refused to use them. The men's room was only useable if you needed to stand up and holding your breath was highly recommended. The last couple of times we went, there was a coffee bar in an old converted house which had immaculately clean restrooms. Thank God! We used to make that drive every summer and I came to dread that section of the trip. I do a lot of driving in the rurals of Nevada and even Highway 50, which they call the loneliest highway in America is a lot more interesting than I-95. That stretch of highway is just awful. Yuk!!!

48 miles to the closest grocery store ... it forces the Mrs. to plan ahead a bit.

Going to work. Blowing snow in the winter. Getting past Taco Johns year round, especially if I skipped lunch. Hot Pepper face!

It's driving across west Texas. It's got to be the worst drive. Long, straight and with nothing to see.

Between Western Chicago Illinois eastern Gary Indiana on I80. My trips back from Denver always include this white knuckle stretch. The time of day or usually night does'nt seem to matter.

I'm used to Atlanta traffic, but despite that, driving out of here at rush hour is always a nightmare. :duh:

The hardest drive ever was when we went from our old apartment in Atlanta all the way to Key West in one night. That was one hell of a drive. :o
