Foamie Paddleboard ....

Postby GPW » Sun Sep 16, 2012 12:55 pm

Well, it seems some people just can’t stand for me to sit around and enjoy my retirement  .. Got a request to build Two (2) Paddleboards.. Just recently seen these , just a FAT surfboard 12’ long 38” wide , to (now get this ) stand up and paddle around on ... :NC Foam with a wood center rib , glassed both sides , and a Fin ...
Might be Fun for the younger crowd, and certainly something to bring along camping ... Anybody tried anything like this ??? Seems pretty Easy after building a trailer ... I dunno’ ...

It's a ton of fun and very popular here at the Lake. You can literally pay thousands for a SUP (stand up paddleboard). There are plans for making one out of wood, I've bought the plans and have them rolled up in a corner. No foam involved in the build. Just something else to keep my hands busy. But first, the Road Foamie's gotta get finished.

If you're making one out of foam, I guess the trick is getting the shape right to create the right hydrodynamics. Much like shaping a giant surfboard as GPW said.

Normally I would have ignored this request , but they offered me Money !!! A real Job !!! :o
So I went on You Tube , studied up on this ... pretty easy really , since I can carve accurately, but have to do the messy fiberglass thing .... Not a problem ... ;)

Now if I was going to make one for myself (doubtful @ my age ) I might lean to exploring the canvas covering thing ... and maybe play around with the designs .... Looks like Fun :D Here I will be doing something similar to other designs ... One little sticking point ... Trying to figure out how I can do it in His Garage and Not my Studio ... Too messy to have around all my “collectables” , Foam dust would get Everywhere!!! .. We’ll have to lay some floor covering/protection down (good chance to try that thick paper we talked about a while ago) ...
Unlike a surfboard , these are pretty Large and Thick (8-10”) , so i was thinking to elminate the wood rib in the center and just beef up the skins on the tension side (bottom ) ... Not going to be used for wave riding , just paddling around and fishing by 50 year olds ... (kids) As usual strength and lightness will be important ...

We’ll see how far this goes ...

There are at least two of them on this board. Tupelosue and netwig.

I've got a 12' one at work - if you want, I can grab some pics and measurements to help with your fabrication.

W2 , Yes, that would be very cool !!! Thanks !!! Been checking all the You Tube videos on the subject ... Not hard , but sure is MESSY  :frightened: , and seems to require some specialized tools , that or a LOT of elbow grease with hand tools ... I wonder if it could be ...er, ... Simplified ... I know if I made one for fishing , it wouldn’t be Fancy at all , and maybe even consider a simple outrigger when going after Mr. Bull Red... (Channel Bass) They’d be dragging that board all over the place.. :o

No sweat, I'll try and do it tomorrow. As far as chasing Mr Bull Red, you can get inflatable outriggers for canoes and kayaks (aka training wheels). I've got a buddy that uses them on his yak when he's going after springs - they clip into a standard rod holder socket. A creative guy ought to be able to bang something together. You'd need to be able to stow the paddle while you're fishing...

Of course I had to do a drawing ... just something simple for flat-water fishing .. ~40” wide for max stability (sans training wheels  ) 12’ long , 6"-8” Thick ... “rocker” just hot wired in , rails just rounded , that’s it ... :o Or I guess I could glue several sheets of 2” foam together with GG and weight the center between two outer supports for some real “rocker”, then just cut it out... Maybe just a simple canvas skin , No FG ...

+1 on attachment point for the paddle...and the tackle box...and the fishing pole. Little "U"-shaped cleats with two hole anchor points, that way you can use the small spring clips and lanyards for freedom of motion, or even cargo netting.

Don't forget a hand grab/tie down. The rotomold kayaks I've seen use a simple hank of nylon cord with a short plastic dowel or tube as a handle. Gives you something to grab onto when launching or throwing on top of your roof rack, and also a place to tie off in transport.

Went on a few striped sea bass rides myself when yak fishing. Amazing the strength even the smaller schoolies have.

I've ridden a couple of boards that have a cut out in the center for a hand hold. Just an oval shape to slide your 4 fingers into. Nothing fancy. I think those are the easiest ones to carry. Tucks under the arm nicely and if the weight is centered, a piece of cake to carry. Nothing awkward about it, just feels normal and natural

Been thinking more about this ... watched a lot of build videos . Not sure I want all that mess in my Studio or yard ... If it’s a Trailer for me , then that’s different ... it’s my own mess eh ... :NC The wife suggested I offer to build them at THEIR house ... That works for me ...   Smart woman , the wife ... ;)

For me , I like Rosey’s boat a LOT better ...  But then , I’m Old and don’t like to get all wet while Fishing ... especially in these BP enriched waters .. :frightened:

I should have been a salesman .... :NC Last night I talked with the prospective SUP owners (couple)... Convinced them that fiberglass was expensive , and Messy ... showed them that canvas was the way to go ... Showed them the trailer ... That did it ... Much easier for me ... And convinced them to do it in their garage and not mine ... 8)
