Time to paint the ugly trailer

Postby daveleb55 » Fri Sep 02, 2011 5:48 pm

We are finally at the stage to paint our pop-up conversion. Started sanding the paint off the aluminum base but we can not sand off the decals from Coleman.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to remove those ugly stripes and Coleman tags?
Thanks

I'm not sure what Coleman uses for graphics...but generally decals will soften/loosen with heat.
A hair dryer, or heat gun used carefully will usually allow their removal.
You may need to use a solvent when finished to remove the remaining adhesive, as it will ball up and clog sandpaper.

My brother has used a "rubber wheel" decal remover with success. Here's a link to one similar to what he uses: http://decalstickerremover.com/

Not sure how well it will work on "well seasoned" stickers, but just thought I'd throw that option out there for you. Since your not worried about the paint, Rob's idea with the heat gun works good.

WD40 will remove stickers and bumper stickers. Try that.

Kutzit!! It will practically fall off 10 minutes after applying it. Of course, it will also remove all the paint and anything else it touches, so only use when you are repainting anyway.

I just did the heat gun/scraper thing on mine. Just don't overheat and it's pretty easy. Someone gave the tip (afterward), that I should have used a chunk of wood as a scraper, and that would have taken the adhesive with it. Instead, once the decals were gone, I tried:
GoofOff (took paint and swirled it),
GooGone (took off the paint),
WD40 (didn't do much of anything),
and Xylene (also took the paint off, but completely off)

Since the Xylene is cheaper in gallon cans, I just used it. You'll need a good aluminum primer for afterward.

Good luck, it's not hard, just tedious

Thanks for all the suggestions. We have almost removed all the 25 year old baked in the Las Vegas sun decals the old fashioned way. Elbow grease and sand paper. Now for the paint.

What do you think you cat is trying to tell us? Could it be a voice fom the other side? I've suspected all t along that cats may be an alien life form and maybe the mothership is about to arrive.

Or maybe it's just her way of saying she's hungry.
